IMO wearing a ski mask (if it is one that completely covers someone's identity) is unacceptable to most people because of the terrorism threat.

How do you think this would be have been handled if he wore a ski mask into a bank, or on a plane?

In this area a convenience store would be considered a very likely "target" for a robbery.
