Karl Rove sure as hell doesn't want another war, and even the Neocons are keeping fairly quiet. Maybe that will change after the election, maybe it won't. The problem is that we shot our wad when we weren't threatened, and now that we aren't threatened, nobody wants to deal with it. Some people thought that action in Iraq would intimidate countries like Iran, and that we wouldn't have to do it again. They were wrong. That was a big miscalculation, with potentially devastating consequences.>> Many things have to come together for the US to start another war, or any war. Congress must be convinced of the need, the Military must be prepared it has to be considered justified to many of our so called friendly Nations, and requires the concurrance of the public. That is , the action it must be saleable, logical and justified in the general public eye. We have to be in fighting mode. We may not have exactly intimidated other Nations, but IMO we have made them think much more seriously of the weakness of their own military and their defences. Saddam was the best armed in the region, with many ammo depots some covering 50 square miles and over 800,000 tons Yet he could not withstand the shock and awe treatment, with up to 2000 cruise missiles per day, and it only required 21 days to reach Baghdad. We may be a bit short on ground troops, but have some awesome power in reserve. Ten Carriers, 50 subs, B-2's that fly from the US non-stop to missions in the ME and return. And the cruise missile supply will have been replenished. War is easy, but we are no good at occupation. Did not plan to need an occupation in Iraq but the Iraqis needed much longer to get their act together than expected. So politicians want no part of an invasion type war before or even after the election. And our citizens want to get back to work, the troops soon need a rest and rotation. It would be a hard sell. If N Korea or Iran become an imminent threat( that nasty word again) Pentagon planners and the State department will develop plans to end the threat using minimal ground forces. Terrorists IMO are making it harder for the rogue Nations. By killing people of any Nation, like Turkey, Spain, SA, Phillipines,Koreans, they are making it much easier for the UN to garner support for any action that may be proposed. Sig
