Eph 2:12 "that you were, in that era, apart from Christ, being alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and guests of the promise covenants, having no expectation, and without God in the world." The verb "were" qualifies the statement. Gentiles by nature have no hope, for their false gods offer them none. Their current hope comes from repentance from their dead works and placing their faith in the gospel. Therefore, people who remain in their unbelief have no hope if they die in their sins.
