FIRST TIME I'VE HEARD ANYTHING COMING FROM KERRY THAT REPRESENTS A WORKABLE THEME.....

Kerry blasts Bush Iraq 'failures'
US Democrat presidential hopeful John Kerry has accused President George W Bush of misleading the American people in the run-up to the Iraq war.

In a series of interviews and campaign rallies, Mr Kerry said he and his running mate, John Edwards, would be better at fighting the "war on terror".

The onslaught marks Democrats' attempts to put the Iraq war at the heart of the presidential race, correspondents say.

On Friday, a Senate report lambasted intelligence failures before the war.

The BBC's Barnie Choudhury says the damning report has given fresh impetus to Mr Kerry's attempt to win the race for the White house.

Soldiers lost their lives because they were wrong

A Democratic Party committee meeting in Florida agreed on Saturday to attack the president's handling of the "war on terror" and the war in Iraq during the election campaign.

It also proposed measures to increase international involvement in Iraq, thereby reducing the burden on US forces.

"No young American should be held hostage to our America's dependency on oil," Mr Kerry said at a campaign speech in North Carolina, his running mate's home state.

Mr Kerry has stepped up his election campaign since naming Mr Edwards as his vice-presidential nominee last Tuesday.

They have since been making joint appearances at locations across America.

'New leadership needed'

Speaking in an interview with the New York Times, Mr Kerry said the president had misled the public over former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction.

"He certainly misled America about nuclear involvement, and he misled America about the types of weapons that were there, and he misled America about how he would go about using the authority he was given," Mr Kerry said.

"And they were wrong. And soldiers lost their lives because they were wrong.

"And America's paying billions of dollars because they were wrong, and allies are not with us because they were wrong."

The only way to restore international confidence in American policy was to have a new leadership with the potential to change the situation, he added.

Rebuilding funds 'mismanaged'

In another development, a Democrat congressman has alleged that billions of dollars allocated for post-war reconstruction in Iraq has been mismanaged.

California's Henry Waxman said independent auditors had raised serious questions about the accounts of the Development Fund for Iraq, which is closely associated with the United Nations-backed oil-for-food programme.

A draft of the auditor's report obtained by Mr Waxman spoke of accounting systems prone to error and possible fraud.

The audit, by KPMG, is due to be made public in Washington later this week.
