The proponents of the President may very well say that the intelligence received was faulty. They may also point to Congress and accuse them of having voted for the war. And the Congress in turn can complete the circle by paointing to faulty intelligence. But it is an inescapable fact that under the circumstances, it is the President and his Administration who are expected to provide the lead to going about analyzing the data, facilitating its verification, working with the other nations of the world to agree with the data and working with them to make the decision to go to war.

Let us see what the President and his VP did instead. This point was very aptly highlighted by Meet the Press today. The VP went out and told everyone that there is no doubt about the existence of WMDs. The President talked about mushroom clouds. To make matters worse, they told the International inspectors who were there on the ground along with US weapons inspectors, that their report was all balloney. They forced the weapons inspectors out of Iraq and even while they wer in Iraq, Bush ordered the mobilization of US troops thereby signalling to all that it was a pre meditated act., thereby corroborating what his close Cabinet member Mr. Paul O'Neill said that Bush was obsessed with Iraq from the day he took office etc.

So the central issue about Bush's record is what did he achieve even on the singular issue he worked on which is Iraq. Iraq is not stable today as it was when he came to office 4 years ago. The US is not immune to terror attacks today and the threat of an attack is more today than it was 4 years ago. We have more enemies today than we had 4 years ago.
