Louisiana probably never made ANY money for the French or Spanish, who tried to practice mercantilism, you know, the colony supplies the center with raw materials while buying finished goods in return.

In practice, Spain focussed on gold and silver coming out of Mexico, and Louisiana bought everything it needed from smugglers, who traded with the Yanks.

There is some irony in that Spanish neglect led to the Yanks taking Texas and that making some contribution to Mexican independence from Spain.

It should not surprise anybody that Mexico wound up in the hands of the Mexicans, America wound up in the hands of the Americans, and Canada wound up in the hands of the Canadians. Just where those borders wound up was sort of up for grabs, but otherwise it was completely predictable.
