Reminds me of the reasons for position sizing in stock trading. There's a size call optimal f which tends maximize results for a given drawdown. Sizes above f frequently result in ruin.

One differnce with the stock trading is the stock trades, like gambling bets, are presumed independent.

With oil drilling, we should hope that something is learned from each well in an area, so that odds should improve as drilling sites are moved, seismic better understod, etc.
