Learn this mantra: Customer is king in China

By GORDON PITTS
From Monday's Globe and Mail
When Jonathon Fischer went visiting customers in Shanghai, he was rattled by the din of would-be buyers yelling loudly at his salespeople.

The Canadian manufacturing executive asked what was happening, betraying his lack of Mandarin language skills and only recent exposure to Chinese negotiating style.

His Chinese managers, comfortable with the high-pitched barrage, explained that customers were demanding lower prices and faster delivery—in the noisy way they knew how.

“The customer in China is king,” says a now enlightened Mr. Fischer, president of Mold-Masters Ltd., of Georgetown, Ont., which makes plastics manufacturing technology —and opens its first Chinese factory in August.

For Mr. Fischer, it was one more signal that he is entering a world where North American rules of management and negotiation do not hold sway.
