I remember the tenor of the campaign. I was old enough to watch TV at 12. While politics has always been a dirty business, Carter and Mondale weren't mean spirited like Bush was in 1988. That was appalling. I hope we never repeat a campaign like that. There will always be mudslinging, but there are somewhat tactful ways of mudslinging. Yelling at your opponent like you want to rip his heart like Bush did in 1988 is not tactful, and I hope we never repeat such lowly tactics. It's one of the reasons I started identifying with the Democratic Party as a young adult. I looked at Bush making a bafoon of himself and personalizing the campaign and I said, that's not me and that's not what I like to see. I voted for Dukakis that fall and have continued voting Democratic since. Sure the Dems have disappointed me at times with their rhetoric and BS, but I find them much easier to listen to then some of the hard right stuff I hear from the Republicans, DOMA being the latest incarnation. Why do the Republicans spend so much time sticking their noses into other people's business? I thought they were the get government off our backs people? Seems like every time I turn around they're trying to insert government into our lives via their conservative social causes.
