China's trade surplus down as imports surge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEIJING - China's trade surplus in June fell 14% year-on-year to 1.84 billion dollars on the back of surging imports, the Ministry of Commerce said Monday.
During the first six months of the year, the country posted a 6.82 billion dollar trade deficit, swinging from a 4.5 billion dollar trade surplus a year earlier, the ministry said on its website.

For June alone, imports rose 50.5% to 48.65 billion dollars after the 35.4% growth seen in May, while exports rose 46.5% to 50.5 billion dollars after a 32.8% gain.

Imports in the first half rose 42.6% year-on-year to 264.90 billion dollars, while exports rose 35.7% to 258.08 billion dollars.
