I'm going to buy "House of Nicollo" and "Empire of Light" for him.

Terrific. Just remember it is the first book in the "House of Niccolo" series you want, called "Niccolo Rising."

"Empire of Light" is fantastic.

I'm going to buy "House of Nicollo". . . .

If he loves densely specific, complex, historical fiction of the non-bodice ripping variety, this is the best. I've never read anyone even close and that includes Sharon Kay Penman's historical novels which had been top of the class for me before I started reading Dunnett.

But "House of Niccolo" is not a book, it's a series. That series begins with the volume called "Nicolo Rising." I found it took about 100 pages for me to get hooked. But I'm now on the seventh volume and already depressed that I have only one more to read.

There is a second series, the "Lyman" series which Dunnett wrote before she wrote the "Niccolo" series. I also recommend that.
