Fed's McTeer says 'best guess' is measured rate hikes
Tuesday, July 13, 2004 7:12:40 PM

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AFX) -- Robert McTeer, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said it was his "best guess" that the Fed would be able to stick to a measured pace of interest rate hikes. "If the recent blip up (in inflation) turns out not to be transitory, we will...do what is necessary even though 'measured' is still my best guess at this point," McTeer said in a speech to a women's business group here Tuesday. McTeer said the Fed was "determined to hold on to the gains made against inflation in the past decade." McTeer said he was committed to price stability even though he is known as a "dove with attitude." McTeer said the economy still as "a way to go before we use up the slack left over from the recession."
