Hardwood means wood from oak, ash, maple, etc. Softwood means pines, redwood, fir - they have cones.

Hardwoods take decades to grow - maybe 60 years + but there is no shortage of hardwood forest in the US. More today than a hundred years ago.

I think you and Lizzie are confusing hardwoods with "old growth" forest. Two different things.
