OT/ Canadian politics

Harper's Conservatives gained significantly in the last election and one of the platforms was increased military spending. Note that I said defense (like Japan's forces) and not military (like the US). Harper would have been wiser to use the word defense and I think they would have gained even more if they had positioned it as a benign spending on defense as opposed to an aggressive American style military.

I write this from Vancouver Canada and while I live in the US, I have Canadian citizenship. I have met many friends, university classmates here, and most will agree Canada's defense is woefully inadequate. Canadians are tired of seeing Canadian soldiers go down because of inadequate equipment-whether it be Sea King helicopters or unarmored Bombardier jeeps.

Remember, much of Canada's energy is in the West, so the West voting for Conservatives is, I believe, an attempt at self-preservation (as well as representation in Ottawa).

Any aggression against Canada would likely include the richer Western Canada energy resources over the East (Hibernia notwithstanding).

Just remember, when you poll your friends, call it 'defense'. Don't forget that Edwards, should he be elected VP, has said he wants to renegotiate NAFTA. So...what will 'die down'?
