OIL!

As Iran (populated mainly by the Shia) is acting tough these days and as the Kingdom of Saud is regarded to be "illegitimate" and therefore in danger of being toppled or usurped by rival factions or by the Shia there and as radical Islamists insist on the departure of the US forces, Saudi Arabia might soon cease to be an oil supplier for the US.

So the US went to Iraq which has the second largest reserves of oil in the world and also because the US wants to maintain a presence in the Middle East for reasons that include Israel amongst other things. Just my opinion only.
