I think India is doing very well with AIDS. I heard a remarkable story on the radio, about an Indian scientist who combined three AIDS drugs into one pill, was sued by the inventor of one of the drugs and won, and is now in Africa, teaching them how to do this in their own factory. I believe the Indian company she worked for was CIPLA. They seem less concerned with profiting from the medicines than saving peoples lives.

Good questions, Cary.

Is hunger decreasing [in India]?

A little bit. There is still a long way to go.
According to UNDP, which has set an ambitious goal of halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger, India has reduced the number of undernourished people as % of total population from 25% to 24% between 1991 and 1999.

Will they be able to cope with AIDS?

Difficult to say. census.gov

It is too early to say whether my optimism about India is justified. Perhaps it is wishful thinking that the benefits of India's IT and biotech initiatives will gradually trickle down to benefit even the poorest of the poor. We shall see.
