Hardwood and softwood are words with meanings. They refer to various species of trees.

Please tell me what species of trees grow in your area of northern CA. And what species grow in the forests referred to as "old growth".

For example, in the part of TX where I live the woods are mixed softwood (pine) and hardwood (oak, hackberry, etc.)

Where I come from in IL (near a national forest btw), the woods are all hardwood - oaks, hickories, maple, beech, ash, etc.
