The article speaks of the engineer, Mr Li's rapid fire English. That's amazing. Most Chinese people have extreme difficulties with English, as most non-musical foreigners have extreme difficulty with the different tones of spoken Chinese. Chinese does not have the vowels in, for example hat and hid. The vowel in hen,let,rest, is present in Chinese but seems to create great troubles for Chinese speakers, perhaps because it is always preceded by a y consonant in Chinese. Spoken Chinese does not differentiate between he and she. If the speaker comes from central China the probability of being unable to distinguish n and l is large. All in all one meets very few good Chinese speakers of English, who didn't go to elementary school in an English speaking country. It would seem that India would have been a better choice as the intelligentsia there speak English at home and in school from day one. Their second language is the local tongue. However with a population of 1.3 billion I suppose China can always provide the six sigmas out excellent speaker of English. Large samples pay, eh?
