"I think that the Democrats keep floating these rumors for the purpose of getting GWB to dig his heals in on the Cheney issue, assuming that any Cheney issue really exists is GWB's mind."

Absolutely. So this "Doctors plot" story is just a load of bull. BUT, it is time for cheney to step up to the plate and say something like this.
"I regret that i have become the focus of this campaign. My health is great and I can certainly perform another term as VP. However, since the Democrats have made me the issue and have slandered me on numerous occasions even going so far as to question my loyalty to the country I love, I hereby withdraw my name for renomination as the Republican VP candidate in 2004. President Bush, who has gallantly led the nation's WOT, needs no distractions in this tough race against the opposition. It is incumbant for every one of us to set aside personal ambition in our mission of reelecting this heroic President. By taking my name out of contention for VP, we can better concentrate on the great issues of our time. God Bless America and God Bless George W. Bush."
And then Bush can praise cheney to the hilt and pick a new candidate timed to maximum advantage vis a vis the dem convention. mike
