Koizumi suffers setback in poll

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhuanet) --Japan's main opposition has leapfrogged Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's party in an opinion poll, pushing the ruling party the second spot for the first time since its inception in 1955.

The opinion poll by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper came after Koizumi suffered a slight setback in upper house elections on Sunday. CRIENGLISH.com reported Wednesday.

The Asahi says its poll of 922 voters on Monday and Tuesday found that support for the Liberal Democratic Party or LDP had slipped from 30 percent in June to a current 27 percent.

Support for the six-year-old opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) -- jumped from 15 percent to 29 percent.

This setback for Koizumi was seen as a judgement on his unpopular pension reforms and the deployment of Japanese troops in Iraq.
