It would be altogether unscientific. I think your point about not wanting to get ahead of mgmt. may be correct. they have had no qualms about making considerable sport of mgmt. estimates as being too rosy, however.

I keep thinking there must be some part of the puzzle I don't get, because every threat I know of appears to have subsided.

1. We do have good IPR in WCDMA.

2. ev-do is carving out a very nice role for itself

3. EDGE, at least in the view of Cingular, is not the competitive equivalent of ev-do.

4. OFDM threat is receding with Sprint's announcement.

5. The dreaded triumverate has yet to emerge as a serious market share threat.

6. Somewhat related to #5,QCOM appears to have no equal in CDMA chipset design, and in cramming multiple functions (including modes and bands) onto a single chip.

7. BREW is a nice surprise, icing on the cake, so to speak.

8. Dr. J's prediction about demand being driven by faster replacement cycles, derided at the time he made it, has come through with a vengeance.

9. The combination of GSM onto multimode QCOM chips, together with the emergence of WCDMA within the GSM community ensures a rapid year over year growth in QCOM's addressable market for the foreseeable future. There is no other large cap tech stock even remotely similarly situated with respect to addressable market.

Seriously, what is not to love here?
