The only reason the Republicans raised the issue in the Senate is because they thought they could make political hay in an election year. They are trying to motivate the religious right. Nobody, repeat nobody thought this had a chance of making law. It's pure posturing... you know that as well as I do, as well as everybody does.

You're almost right, but no cigar. Do you honestly think they would be raising this issue if there weren't gay folks lining up to get married illegally and having it happen? This is a knee-jerk reaction, not some master plan that would have happened anyway.

They are trying to appease their base who would be really bent if they didn't do anything about it. At least now they can say they tried.

That isn't true. It is certainly a reason but not the only one. Also even if it was true, it would also be true that the issue was raised by the left, and the call for an amendment is a response to the actions of the left.
