For fun, one can go to dfleming.ameranet.com and actually put in the 5700 and 72mm (actual at telephoto) and estimate a distance and see the effect of different apertures.

There's a whole lot of trade-offs at work, Thomas. I'm shooting in aperture priority mode... usually at f/8, which is the sweet spot for this lens. If I use a tighter aperture, I'll get more DOF, but at a lower shutter speed, and in order to hand hold at 450mm, I need a fast shutter. I'm using ISO500, and I could always use a higher ISO setting, but even on a dslr, there's a price to be paid in terms of color depth and noise. And to top it off, I like the blurred background effect which comes with wider apertures.
