GAZA, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian police chief Ghazi al Jabali was released Friday shortly after he was abducted by militants south of Gaza city, Palestinian sources said.

Palestinian security forces and the Fatah movement officials accompanied al Jabali back to the Gaza city from the Bureij refugee camp, where he was reported to have been taken, the sources said.

Al Jabali was abducted at gunpoint earlier Friday after his convoy was ambushed in south of Gaza. Two of his bodyguards were wounded when exchanging fire with the kidnappers.

The release came after militants from the Brigades of Jenin's Martyrs reached agreement with the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to speed up anti-corruption reforms, Palestinian security sources said.

The military group, an armed wing under the Palestinian popular resistance committees, comprise mainly former Fatah's members.

It was reported that the group carried out the kidnapping in a bid to press Palestinian authorities to speed up reforms and rein in corruption.

As a member of Fatah's revolutionary council, Al Jabali is knownto be loyal to Arafat.

He was removed from government position for corruption one year ago. However, Arafat brought him back after the collapse and the reshuffle of Mahmoud Abbas' government.

Jabali has narrowly escaped several assassination attempts on his life this year, including a bomb attack at doorstep and an assault in office. Enditem
