I don't know much about medical treatment to stop craving alcohol and/or abusing alcohol, other than what I've seen in the movies, but I was talking about medical treatment to keep the patient from having delirium tremens, DTs. DTs are not all in your mind, and you can't use willpower to get over them. They can cause seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, and even death. nlm.nih.gov
