In Va., as I understand it, if you don't have a concealed carry permit, you can carry a gun in plain sight on the front seat, or you can lock it in the trunk, but putting it on the back seat or the back floor of any vehicle or the open rear area of a station wagon/SUV/van is a no-no. Any place you can physically grab it but the cops can't see it is a no-no.

Maybe placing it on the back seat is ok if there are plenty of windows, but my guess is that in a traffic stop, you'll be arrested. I know for a fact, personal experience, that if it's on the front seat, and you tell the officer that you have a gun on the front seat, he will be cautious but you're probably not in trouble.

For sure, on the floor behind the driver's seat is illegal.
