In the past twenty-five years China has grown to be the world’s sixth largest economy, the third most active trading nation and a motor for global economic development.
It is undergoing a technological and industrial revolution that benefits from a vast and educated low-wage workforce. China’s success, despite its economic, political and social shortcomings, suggests that a politically centralised and sometimes ideologically inflexible Government can successfully deliver an agenda that both frees and harnesses market forces at the same time.
