This "Allawi executes terrorists" story started with Zayed, was picked up by an Aussi reporter, and has now hit the Washington Times with a UPI version. I expect our media to jump on it with horrified exclamations about how "we should dump this Saddam CIA monster!" They are looking for something bad over there. The "two witnesses" are probably Joe Wilson and Richard Clarke. :>) I start with Tim Blairs comments, and then give you the WP cleaned up version.

As Nadine mentioned, it plays fine with the Iraqis. They want these bastards killed.

RUMOURS REPEATED

Zeyad at Healing Iraq reported on July 1:

Another widespread and preposterous rumour is that Ayad Allawi has been showing up at IP stations and executing criminals himself, and I have heard this one from a very large number of people.

This rumour has now reached the Sydney Morning Herald’s Paul McGeough:

Iyad Allawi, the new Prime Minister of Iraq, pulled a pistol and executed as many as six suspected insurgents at a Baghdad police station, just days before Washington handed control of the country to his interim government, according to two people who allege they witnessed the killings.

They say the prisoners - handcuffed and blindfolded - were lined up against a wall in a courtyard adjacent to the maximum-security cell block in which they were held at the Al-Amariyah security centre, in the city's south-western suburbs.M

They say Dr Allawi told onlookers the victims had each killed as many as 50 Iraqis and they "deserved worse than death".

The ABC has more:

Two unnamed people, who are alleged to have witnessed the shootings, told Australian journalist Paul McGeough that Iyad Allawi allegedly shot the insurgents in a courtyard adjacent to a maximum security cell in Baghdad.

Dr Allawi's office has denied the claims.

A written statement to Mr McGeough says that Dr Allawi has not visited the prison and does not carry a gun.

But Mr McGeough stands by his claims.

He says he cannot name the witnesses, but describes what the two Iraqis allege they saw.

Strong enough for a major SMH piece.

Report: Allawi shot Iraqi suspects

Baghdad, Iraq, Jul. 16 (UPI) -- Iraqi Interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi killed six suspected insurgents just days before he was handed power, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The report cites two witnesses to the killing who say Allawi fatally shot the prisoners, who were handcuffed, blindfolded and lined up against a wall in a courtyard near the maximum-security facility at al-Amariyah security centre near Baghdad. They quoted Allawi as saying the men "deserved worse than death" because each had killed some 50 Iraqis.

The newspaper added the killings were seen by about a dozen Iraqi police and four Americans from Allawi's security team. Interior Minister Falah al-Naqib, another alleged witness, is said to have congratulated Allawi.

The Herald report in its Saturday editions said both Allawi's office and Naqib denied the report.

The newspaper quoted witnesses as saying Allwai told those present he wanted to send a clear message to police on how to deal with insurgents.

Seven prisoners were brought out. Six were shot in the head and died. One was wounded, the report said
