"Maybe a few senators should run for the Assembly," fumed Senate President Alan Lasee (R-De Pere), mad that Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman decided to try and oust Panzer, his West Bend neighbor and the GOP leader in the Senate. "We're not exactly one big happy family," Lasee said of Republicans, who controlled the Legislature during the session that ended in the spring. Then, Republicans controlled the Senate, 18-15, and the Assembly, 59-40. As more proof of fraying GOP Assembly-Senate relations, Grothman said that up to eight Assembly Republicans had volunteered to help his campaign against Panzer. With Democrats cheering the new GOP split, Assembly Speaker John Gard (R-Peshtigo) knocked down speculation that he privately encouraged Grothman to run against Panzer to remove one other possible GOP candidate for governor in 2006. Gard called that "laughable," saying he made dozens of calls to Grothman trying to talk him out of challenging Panzer. He said he had assured Panzer and other Senate Republicans he made no move against the majority leader. Grothman said it was his decision alone to take on Panzer, and Gard "never told me to run." But Grothman said that if he beat Panzer, Gard would have one more advocate in the Senate. "I would probably get along better (as a senator) with the speaker," Grothman said. "I'm a conservative Republican; John Gard is a conservative Republican. I don't think anybody has ever accused Mary Panzer of being a conservative Republican." But Panzer said: "I'm a pragmatic, conservative, solution-finder."jsonline.com
