Earnings woes unsettle valley

NERVOUSNESS DESCENDS AS EXPERTS GROPE TO EXPLAIN SUDDEN WAVE OF BAD NEWS

By Chris O'Brien

Mercury News

Perhaps nothing better summed up the business mood in Silicon Valley this week than a recent memo sent from software analyst Pat Walravens to his clients titled: ``What the #%^&*!$ Happened?''

That's the question echoing around the valley after more than a dozen technology companies warned over the past two weeks they would probably miss -- or had missed -- their earnings targets.
