the REALLY sad thing is that for about $4-5 a car, they can build a bluetooth handsfree kit into EVERY car. The car mfgs are promoting it because Intel never finsihed what they started with bluetooth to make it a REAL VIABLE technology.

BT chip <$3
micrphone <$1
software and control in the radio <$2

The phone can be made to do the echo cancellation with ANY bluetooth device by doing an active noise calibration when it is pushed to Send.

But if they did this, then shitty car kits like the MOTO v60 CRAP for mercedes would never get to market and MOT couldn't sell those crap phones for $600 a peice....

Some people can't chew gum and walk a straight line simultaneously. Some people can't walk and talk simultaneously. Some people can't drive and talk.

There are enough laws already requiring people to drive with due care and attention and not crash into other people.

Sometimes it's safer to talk and drive simultaneously, because driving is usually so boring that something to occupy the driver's mind is needed so they don't nod off to sleep, or start gazing around at scenery, or looking at the dial on the radio, or some other boredom filler.

Plus, the value of the calls should be taken into account. There's a cost/benefit calcuation needed and the driver is in the best position to value the benefits. By making cellphone use illegal, that imposes a cost on people. That cost hasn't been added up. The benefits of cellphone use haven't been added up. Some Luddites just declare cellphone use a bad thing and therefore illegal.
