I didn't exclude extra-universe origin. A parallel universe origin is definitely a possibility, even more likely is a non-parallel, universe with a different space-time continuum basis, intersecting and interacting with ours long enough to deposit really alien entities amongst us. Somebody dig up Rod Serling and Gene Roddenberry; they'll know what to do. Quickly, before the evil, corrupting influence spreads to others unaware of the harm that can befall our species.
