This whole Wilson thing smells of self-puffery to me.

As you know, I am more into the "story about the story," on events. Wilson is a guy who spent his career at State in embassies inventorying toiletpaper. He finally got a bump to about the most minor Ambassador job available. He then blew that so badly they forced him into early retirement.

The Republicans didn't do their homework when he surfaced and let him build a phony reputation on his lies. Now that he is done, they are letting the press off the hook because they are afraid of the investigation going on. Too bad.

One thing that this, and other events show, is that the guys in the CIA are law unto themselves when it comes to leaking and distorting to undermine the Admin. State has been this way all along, even Roosevelt had to go around them. I think it got bad at the CIA when Nixon tried to use them.

One thing this shows is that you want your own guy in at State and the CIA who is loyal to YOU. They have to be willing to stop this kind of shit. It will happen with any President, but especially with a conservative one.
