UPDATE - Occidental profit soars with oil prices
Monday July 19, 7:43 am ET

NEW YORK, July 19 (Reuters) - Occidental Petroleum Corp. (NYSE:OXY - News) on Monday reported that second-quarter earnings surged as worries about tight supplies and disruptions drove oil and natural gas prices to new highs and new projects helped boost production to record levels.

The Los Angeles-based energy producer reported net income of $581 million, or $1.48 a share, in the quarter, up from $374 million, or 98 cents, in the year-ago period. Analysts on average had expected the company to earn $1.38 a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Occidental said quarterly crude oil and natural gas production rose about 6 percent to the equivalent of 574,000 barrels per day.

Quarterly net sales of oil, gas and chemicals rose to $2.75 billion from $2.27 billion last year.

Shares of Occidental closed Friday trade on the New York Stock Exchange (News - Websites) at $50.47. In the first half Occidental shares rose 15 percent, outperforming the Standard & Poor's integrated oil companies index, which rose 10 percent.
