OT: I tried Japan's Bullet Train last year and was expecting a lot.
But I found that the rides had nothing of the smooth ride of France's TGV. Most noticeable was a frequent deceleration/acceleration of the car as if there was too much play in the links between cars. Entering a tunnel or crossing another train was always accompanied by a very unpleasant "thump".
Also, even though I do not have any specific figures, the last time I checked, the regular and top speeds of the TGV was higher than the Bullet Train, but the TGV can achieve this only on new special tracks, and has to slow down considerably on sections of old tracks. I believe now they have upgraded most of their tracks.
