If she made any of it up she deserves a visit from the FBI.

Scaring the crap out of people for nothing.

KT,

I read the follow up and visited the band's web page. Most musicians do take their instruments on board.

Personally though, if the policies that were talked about in the article are the reality, I am WAY more concerned about flight safety and the possibility of using planes as weapons via bombs etc... than I was.

Behavior like that should have been examined regardless of whether the marshalls "believed" the guys were clean or not. Even if the writer was a bit hysterical, there was obviously enough suspicious behavior to get the attention of the flight attendants, pilot, and other passengers.

Second, she did state that she didn't have any predisposition to being afraid to fly with middle eastern passengers and gave an example.

>Looking at it from the other way around, can you imagine being one of 12 "furriners" on board a flying cigar container with a bunch of loony whites who see a terrorist under every bed? Pretty scary.<

I think that's the downside of fitting a profile that says you are a higher risk. I understand all the arguments against profiling.

However, we use stats like that in all forms of insurance and in our daily lives even when we don't realize it. IMHO, there is a level of intrusion that some people will have to tolerate in circumstances like these otherwise we are just being stupid for the sake of principal. When the balance gets out of line, thoughtful people will speak up.

I say pull over teenage drivers on weekend nights when their cars are swerving back and forth and check the bags of middle eastern men that are going to the bathroom in a suspicious manner. I would feel exactly like that even if I were from Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia etc... I don't want to be on the same plane as a bunch of martyr wannabes and if most of them look like me then check me and everyone that looks like me. Just get me home safe and don't beat me up.
