I only heard it before, never saw it, so I just assumed the reference was to tea being the strongest concoction for drink. I don't actually drink much tea anyway. Glad I finally got that straightened out, I'll sleep easier tonight knowing that it is resolved.

I think it can be "teetotal" as well as "teetotaler".

Yup, just checked the OED.
