That is anything but clear.

In 2002, the states with the most executions in order of the # of executions ranked from highest were TX [13], OK [18], MO [15], GA [19], VA [38], FLA [2], SC [6] and OH [30]. The number next to the state's name is not the number of executions in the state but rather the state's rank in terms of violent crime, one being the worst, and 50 being the best. Out of the 8 states with the most emphasis on capital executions, six had violent crime rates in the top twenty. Only two, OH and VA, were in the bottom 20.

So is capital punishment a deterrent to violent crime? From the statistics above, it doesn't look that way.

Instinctively, I don't think its right for us to take the life of someone outside the womb. What's wrong with sticking the sucker in a prison and throwing away the key?
