You have to balance convenience and safety ... though I don't see why once it is in the overhead bin, it shouldn't stay there. And everything should go in the bin but reading material.

Anyone reaches for the overhead bin, jump him.

Carry-on luggage is necessary for airline passengers carrying anything of value due to long-standing and rampant theft by baggage employees.

Once airlines take security seriously enough that a camera or laptop is safe in your checked luggage, then passengers will have less need for carry-ons.

Theft of valuable items from checked luggage has been a problem on US carriers for decades. This is not a problem in many other countries, such as Australia.

If the airlines can't or won't stop theft, why should you trust their aircraft maintenance or security against terrorists?

KT,

>As I mentioned in another post, I don't see why ANY carry-ons are allowed in this period of tight security. <

A lot of musical instruments are very valuable and delicate. Musicians are extremely reluctant to have their gear handled by airline people. Also, some are sophisticated enough to know which ones to steal. I think the volume is low enough to make an exception, but they will have to be checked.
