...why should both substances be treated the same in legal quarters?

Either criminalize the use of drugs that involve risk, regulate them for legal use, or leave the issue totally open to the individual's judgement up to the point that an event impacted by the use of drugs occurs.

Here is what I said earlier: "I would like to see the punishment for crimes that are committed while under the influence carry an extra weight. The reason is that some people get loaded as a means of finding the courage to commit unsavory acts. In other cases people could or should know that the use of substances carries risks, so they should accept responsibility for the outcomes of this risky behavior as part of the decision to ingest. Temporary insanity because they didn't have control of their faculties at the time of an event should not be a defense in this case. The idea behind vehicular homicide as a drunk driver should be expanded to include other types of harm done as a result of getting loaded."

In other words, some events that are impacted by poor judgement might not be considered a crime when straight but should be if we conclude the poor judgement or impaired ability was impacted by the use of a substance ... just like with vehicular homicide. So, we would be criminalizing some behavior that was not considered criminal in the past.

Apparently the other issue of how people become part of a group think and culture was lost on you. There is no opportunity for open mindedness in a group think culture ... Try it and see what happens. The liberal agenda is not open to criticism, it is very lock step. You are open to choose something other than the right wing agenda. If you want to call that open minded, ok ... but I don't think it qualifies any more than a right winger proclaiming themselves open minded with certain limits (left wing stuff).
