Are you saying to test everything against the historic teachings of the church? Yes! What else would you test it against? The historic teachings of the Church include at the center the Holy Scriptures. There was NO New Testament scriptures for the first generations of Christians. The Church leaders determined the doctrines and teachings of the Church. The Church came before the canonical NT scriptures. If you had been a first century Christians, you would have depeneded totally on the Church to teach and exhort you. At the end of the first generation, many writings by the early Church were read in the congregaion. The bishops determined which were inspired. After some three hundred years of this practice, the Church leaders, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, determined which writings were to be included in our present bible. "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:" That's correct! It was the Apostles and then their successors, the Church Fathers, who received the teachings of Christ and the writings of the Apostles and disciples. You receive Christ Jesus as he is brought to you through the Church by their Scriptures and Liturgical celebrations(worship). In American protestanism, each man "does what is right in his own eyes". There are some 10,000 denominations as each new generation rebels and goes about forming another denomination. They simpl do not follow the Apostolic admonition: "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:" They simply reject the Jesus ordained Church and her teachings. "7 rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught , abounding therein with thanksgiving." They cannot be taught because each does what is right in his own eyes. The Apostolic authority established by Christ is rejected. They pretend that the follow the Church scriptures but reject the Church. "8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit , after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." This is precisely what has happened to you my friend. You are "spoiled" through the philosophy of vain deceit and cannot be taught because you reject Christ's ordained Church and Church leaders throughout the centuries. You follow instead "the rudiments of the world" because you have rejected Christ's authority.
