In some places, generally where there is more population, the only gun you can legally use is a shotgun. Where I live in Pa it's like that. The shotgun slug drops rapidly so a miss won't travel as far as a rifle bullet.

Hunting with a shotgun is actually the only legal way to use a firearm in some of the more populated regions of the country. This covers a small percentage of the legal areas one can hunt today - back in Kerry's day, this area was significantly smaller. You use a slug instead of a shell with shot in it. Your accuracy is dramatically reduced compared to even a cheap rifle. This is not a preferred method of deer hunting if a rifle is legal. Heck, I'd use my bow instead of winging it with a double barrel shotgun.

In several decades of hunting experience, I have never heard of anyone using a double barrel shotgun to hunt deer, nor have I ever seen a double barrel shotgun designed for deer hunting (two barrels kills the accuracy when a single projectile is fired). That does not mean it has ever happened or that this type of shotgun does not exist.

One would think a person of Kerry's means would have had a top flight single barrel shotgun, with good sights or optics & a rifled barrel that is designed specifically for deer hunting.

One more thing, I have archery hunted for more than 20 years. You need to get within 30 yards of a deer to have the slightest chance of making a kill shot. Kerry would have wanted 60 yards at least with his POS outfit. No one, & I mean no one with any hunting experience would have spent more than a few moments crawling on their stomachs. All you would do is alert every deer for 200 yards to your position from the noise you make & the scent you send out sweating. IOW, will never get a deer in your range using those tactics & Kerry's equipment.

And it would never be something you would highlight among your favorite hunting memories or tactics, unless you were admitting you were clueless or were being less than honest.

<<Deer hunting with a shotgun?>>

Right gun with a slug will kill a deer at 150 yards. In areas where the brush is dense and the shots at 30 yards and under they use buck shot.
