Their direct commander in the field was a NATO officer (in this case he coincidentally happened to be an American).

What is it about this detail that you find so hard to understand, or accept. You pick the best guy to command NATO forces, of Coalition forces, or UN forces. Who gives a sh-t if it's an American or Mexican or an Algerian?

If you can't stand the idea of American troops be commanded by someone from another country, you ought to examine your prejudices. You are wearing your patriotism on your sleeve.
