>> How so? "Under God" was inserted in the 1950s.

Because American History is replete with references to God dating back long before the 1954 insertion of "Under God" into the Pledge. From the nation's origin, references to God are everywhere. If the Founding Fathers found it to be a violation of Church and State, they would not have done it.

As an example consider the Great Seal of the United States, the development of which was undertaken on July 4, 1776. Franklin and Jefferson proposed a design which had Moses crossing the Red Sea, with Pharaoh giving chase, with the statement, "Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God".

The final design of the seal contains on its reverse, "Annuit Coeptis" ("He has favored our undertakings").

The National Motto "In God We Trust" has been around since the Civil War.

This stuff is everywhere. While the Left would love for us to revise our history (and the infamous, horrible book, "A People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn is a perfect example), it really makes no sense to do so. Our history is important and we really don't need liberals rewriting it 200 years after the fact.
