The Timing of The Berger Story

I am reading lots of speculation about the timing of the Berger story. Some think the AP knew the story would break eventually, and came out with it now so that it would be forgotten by the election. I think the timing just before the 9/11 report is issued is interesting. I expect the mainstream media to let the 9/11 report drown out any additional reporting on Berger, although since Berger took the documents while preparing to testify before the 9/11 commission, the story actually SHOULD get a longer life because of the release of the report. If the media were fair and balanced, it would, but I don't think it will happen. (See my post of yesterday regarding the same.)

The other issue of timing concerns the Democrat convention. The exposure of two of Kerry's foreign policy advisors (Berger and Wilson) as less than honest, and possibly even criminal, gives the Republicans plenty of ammunition to counter Democrats' attacks on Bush's foreign policy. If this were a Republican scandal the media would use every reference to foreign policy at the convention to rehash the stories of the liar and the trouser stuffer, but don't expect to see that treatment applied to the Democrats in Boston. If anything, the story of the "Sunshine Boys" will probably suffocate the rest of the life out of the sagas of Joe Wilson and Sandy Berger. It will be up to the Republicans to remind the voters of the caliber of Kerry's foreign policy team.
