Certainly the stock action today would refute any rumors about MRV! m1 Portfolio Update: An Offering, Details and Buzz There go the momentum folks again, running from Avanex (AVNX:Nasdaq). The stock is down 12% today on news that the company filed a $100 million shelf registration for working capital and also filed the shares that Corning (GLW:NYSE) and Alcatel (ALA:NYSE ADR) paid for at the same time they handed their fiber-optic component businesses over to Avanex. The fact that the company needs more money isn’t necessarily a bad thing, given that it is still recovering from the optical depression that ended in recent quarters. But the company’s timing on the filing could hardly have been worse, with the market trashing high-beta stocks anyway. As I’ve lately mentioned repeatedly, the portfolio has plenty of exposure to optical already, so I’m not going to add more Avanex shares here. Even though Alcatel, which has to buy more than 70% of its components from Avanex, is winning some big and profitable contracts, I continue to think JDS Uniphase (JDSU:Nasdaq) and MRV Communications (MRVC:Nasdaq) are more compelling at these levels. A couple of other quick notes: Verizon (VZ:NYSE) re-reiterated its intentions to pass 1 million homes in its fiber-to-the-premises buildout this year, and named the service, lamely, “Fios.” Also, I’m hearing buzz that Siemens (SI:NYSE ADR) is interested in acquiring Ciena (CIEN:Nasdaq). The fit would make sense because it would give Siemens a good foothold into the U.S. markets and address some technological gaps that the company needs filled.
