Your name is REDfish but surely you're not suggesting that the people of Nicaragua would prefer a communist gov? They've proven more than once in recent yrs that they want a democracy.

You are quite right. But many Republican folks would disagree with you. Reagan and Bush Sr. helped topple many popularly elected governments in Central America and South America and supported terrorists that murdered lots of innocent folks and created much chaos and ruin in general.

For example, the economy of Nicaragua was destroyed. Why?
Because the popularly elected government had leftist leanings.

It was feared that the popularly elected leftist governments might fall into the Soviet Orbit. In view of the fact that these countries are in America's backyard (as is Communist Cuba) and the Cold War was on, the US administrations of the time feared the worst and destroyed those popularly elected (leftist-leaning) governments!

This was nipping things in the bud, so to speak!
