I agree with you on both counts - secession was primarily due to slavery, and there is no express mechanism in the Constitution for secession. This is not acceptable to supporters of the Confederacy, perhaps because one of their favorite arguments is that slavery was on its way out, anyway, so why fight over it?

It probably will come as no surprise that they also blame Lincoln for starting the Civil War, despite the fact that so many states seceded before he was even inaugurated.

Sort of like blaming Bush for the 1999 - early 2000 tech wreck, or maybe I am stretching the point.
