>>However, if it wasn't for the US Govt building reliable roads "in the name of war"
Not a single one of our great auto companies would be able to exist.<<

Huh??? Road's were built originally by the people. They started out as trails, (i.e. Sante Fe Trail etc). Auto companies existed before the Gv't "decided" to build them as you say. So that's a false claim.

>>And I'll repeat
To go back 170+ years:
If it wasn't for our US Govt taking on the task of harnessing water via dams.
we wouldn't have a single field to pull cotton...<<

That's what government is for, to build the infrastructure for us to excel. It is not to develop technology for which we may or may not need or want.

It is hard to believe that you want to tell government to develop fuel cell technology. You have cheap source of energy now. When the payback is right, new methods willcome onto the market. Aren't you the guys that gripe that our deficits are too big under Bush. But, go ahead spend more money on an alternative that isn't cost effective. What will be your response if fuel cell cars were available tomorrow, when the cost to operate that type of vehicle comes in at 4 times the cost of operating you current car. Will you buy? Not if you're smart. And, oh by the way, fuel cells offers just slightly better energy efficiency vs. an internal combustion engine. Also, the hydrogen to operate those cars would have to come from existing oil reserves at this time. There is no panacea.

If you want to have a civil discussion, let me know. If you want to go to the Jim Willie level, that's fine too.
