I am sure you're a very nice lady, and have no idea what it feels like to be treated as a common criminal, so hope I am not hurting your feelings.

You're not hurting my feelings.

I challenge authority and silly rules and poor service all the time--have all my life--I think it started with the nuns--although not so much as before I had my awakening about the justice system that came with my jury duty. The thought that they would arrest me for taking a plastic butter cup that is valued at maybe a quarter is preposterous. (I'm way too big a tipper. <g>)

I walk around with goods in my pockets every once in a while in the grocery store when the store neglects to round up its hand baskets and put them by the door or I didn't take a basket thinking I would only get one or two items and ended up picking up more. I always have plenty of pockets since I don't carry a purse. I pull the items out of my pockets when I get to the register. No one has ever so much as looked at me funny, at least not that I noticed.

Last summer I bought a sun hat at Lord and Taylor. I liked it so much I bought another just to have one in reserve. When I went in for the second one, I got there just as the store was opening and hoping to make it a quick trip before it got too hot. The hat was right near the door so I picked it up and went looking for a sales person to pay. Couldn't find one anywhere. Finally I heard some change clanking at the other end of the store so I followed the sound and found a woman counting money into her drawer. I stood there for a terribly long time while she ignored me before I went looking again for someone to pay. Finding no one I went over to the door and waved the hat in front of the security device setting off the alarms. I just stood there waving it bells aclanging for what seemed like a good ten minutes but was probably less. Finally two sales people came over and I handed them the credit card I had been carrying around with the hat. One of them fussed and fussed at me and told me I was lucky that she responded rather than security. I was so frustrated by then I laughed in her face. I was so obviously not stealing that hat. Had I wanted to, I would have been home having breakfast before they got around to responding to the bell.

I take your point about being treated as a common criminal but I would likely find the experience fascinating, another life experience to add to a lifetime of fascinating experiences. At least after it was over I would. <g>
